Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment is needed when gum (periodontal) disease is present. Gum disease often has silent symptoms, meaning, it can go unnoticed until the advanced stages. Annual Comprehensive Periodontal Exams help diagnose gum disease early which enables earlier and less invasive intervention.

Gingivitis

This is a common and mild form of periodontal disease. It often causes the gums to become irritated and inflamed leading to red and swollen gums that bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Professional hygiene treatment and good at-home oral care can adequately resolve and reverse gingivitis. If left untreated, it often results in a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is caused by a severe infection in the gums. It is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in plaque which can spread below the gum line. The bacteria produces toxins that irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic inflammatory response. This causes surrounding tissues and bone that support the teeth to break down creating pockets between the teeth. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen causing more gum tissue and bone to be destroyed. If left untreated, the teeth may become loose and fall out or need to be extracted. Periodontitis is treated by routine professional deep cleanings.
